Summary

High above the streets of San Francisco, corporate accountant CHRIS JANSON has built a life defined by control ever since the sea took her fisher mother. She’s successful, disciplined, and fiercely devoted to her teenage daughter LUCIE. But despite all Chris has done to keep the past at bay, Lucie begins echoing the grandmother she never knew.

A misfit in the city, the teen is allowed to work summers with her fisherman grandfather in the Northern California coastal town of Pine Cove, a tight-knit community determined to preserve what’s left of its eco-conscious fishing tradition. It’s an arrangement sustained by her grandfather’s determination to keep both the family business and Lucie’s place in it alive — something Chris has yet to fully confront.

But when he dies, it falls to Chris to decide the fate of her father’s debt-strapped salmon boat. She returns home not only to grieve, but to finally settle that chapter of her life. Yet as Chris and Lucie’s summer on the coast unfolds, the certainty the accountant has always relied upon begins to unravel.

With old wounds resurfacing and buried longings awakening, Chris comes to realize what she’s spent years trying to manage is slipping out of her control. So much so, there may be no way to hold on to Lucie without losing her.
